Get started

From install to your first plan.

Two of these steps need a Jira admin: installing, and one setting after it. Everything else you can do yourself, within your own Jira permissions.

  1. Install Canopy from the Atlassian Marketplace

A Jira admin installs it for the whole site, which takes about a minute. Every site gets a 30-day free trial.

Canopy is on its way to the Marketplace. Until the listing is live, the tour shows it in use.

  2. Open it in any project

Choose Canopy in the project's sidebar. Every project gets it, except Jira Product Discovery projects.

  3. Add one link type (a site admin, once)

If the link type is missing, Canopy opens on a screen headed "One link type unlocks Canopy’s own hierarchy". A site admin adds it under Settings › Issues › Issue linking, named Canopy Hierarchy. The screen has the exact wording and a button that copies a note for your admin. The details.

You can press "Continue with Jira’s hierarchy" and work straight away: viewing, filters, Views, rollups, field edits and reordering all work on Jira's own hierarchy. Nesting cards under new parents waits for the link type.

  4. Bring in your structure, or start fresh

If the project already has epics and children, Canopy shows that hierarchy at once. A banner offers to adopt it (Adopt), which writes one Canopy link per parent-child pair so you can reshape the tree freely and nest deeper than Jira allows. The links are visible in Jira, so read "What this does" first. A project admin can switch back to Jira's tree later in one step; nothing is deleted and the links are kept.

If the project is empty or flat, there is nothing to adopt. With permission to create work items, select the project card and press Tab to create the first item.

  5. Learn five keys

Tab adds a child, Enter a sibling, R renames, / finds anything, and ? lists every other key. The tour shows them in two minutes.

  6. Save a View your team can share

Press F to filter by person, status or sprint, then ⌘S and choose "Whole team". Everyone on the project can open it from the View switcher with V.
